San José Public Transportation Overview

Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA)

VTA Light Rail Stations & Train:
Santa Clara VTA: The VTA serves Santa Clara County with excellent bus and light rail service. For reasonable fares you can ride one of their over 500 busses and 50 light rail cars; VTA can get you where you're going. VTA also provides special services to help make traveling easier for the San Jose resident. They have a full array of maps on their website to help you plan your trip or daily commute. Simply park your car at one or the designated long-term parking spaces found at many VTA light rail stations and you can ride to the airport. There is a seven day maximum parking limit.

Please note, bus drives do not give change so exact change is suggested. Also, purchase a VTA Day Pass or Light Rail pass before boarding any Light Rail Train. Tickets are not sold on the train, and the fine for not carrying a ticket is over $100. VTA also offers many free services including free shuttle service to the Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport and the HP Pavilion Center (ie. the Sharks Arena).

One of the most useful services VTA offers is the free help you get by calling their Customer Service line at (408) 321-2300. Representatives will help you by planning your trip on the VTA or by helping you make a last-minute connection by providing you with information about the fastest VTA route to your destination. Their hours are M-F 9:00am-6:00pm, most holidays: 7:30am-4:00pm and they are closed on Saturday, Sunday, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day.

You can access a PDF formatted map of the entire VTA system on our mirror by clicking here. You may also access individual route maps and detailed travel information at the VTA website, http://www.vta.org.

Trains come with bike cars for your bicycles and pleanty of room for bags and luggage. Just make sure to purchase the ticket before you get onto the train. There are CalTrain vending machines at the train stations to make it fast and easy to get your ticket, and once you are on the train a CalTrain representative will come by to mark your ticket.
